Michael Richards, CPT

   
Michael received his BA from Northeastern Illinois University. He is an American Council on Exercise Advanced Health and Fitness Specialist, a National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer, an International Fitness Professionals Association Certified Pesonal Trainer and a CHEK Institute Level 3 Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach.

Michael transformed himself at the age of 23, when he lost over 160 pounds through proper diet, exercise and stress reduction. His success was not losing 160 pounds, but maintaining it for over 10 years.

He is the founder of MBS Fitness, LLC where he coaches and trains clients in lifestyle modification and wellness achievement. Working together with Dr. Gail Bryant, he is co-founder of Wellness 365 branding a new style of healthcare called "Clinical Wellness."

Dr. Bryant has a BA from the University of Chicago, an MD from The Chicago Medical School, and did her post-graduate training in Family Practice at Lutheran General Hospital. She is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, holds membership in the American Academy of Family Practice, and is on staff at Northwest Community Hospital. She treats patients of all ages in her practice.

Like so many people, I have fought a lifelong battle with obesity and food addiction. Over the years, I had occasional, fleeting success with weight loss, only to quickly regain what I had lost. When I received a frightening phone call from my doctor in October 2008, I knew the jig was up. She informed me that my sugars, cholesterol, and triglycerides were off the charts, not to mention elevated blood pressure. Either I change my ways or face becoming diabetic. I was also putting myself at risk for heart disease, high blood pressure and having to add a host of new medications.  Having failed before, I knew this time I needed help.

With my life coach at the helm, I started a new lifestyle of healthy eating and regular exercise. Three months later, I repeated my blood test and physical. The results? A complete and utter triumph! Everything was normal. Triglycerides dropped from 445 to 175, cholesterol from unmeasureable to a total of 84 (bad cholesterol only 39!), sugar levels were normal and blood pressure 110/70.

Ultimately I could not have achieved this success without my life coach, Michael Richards. It was his knowledge, guidance, wisdom and compassion that made my goals achievable. Because he addressed my challenges holistically, all necessary elements came together to obtain success in a clear, simple, concrete way. I just wanted to send a quick note to say "thank you" for an energetic, inspirational and informative workshop yesterday. I think you made a great impression on our employees! I knew there was a need for education regarding wellness because of the focus groups we did at the end of 2007, but I never expected to have 104 people attend the session. I have run numerous training series and know how important it is to make an impact on the audience at the start of the program. You certainly made a positive impression on our employees today with your passion and energy around lifestyle coaching. Little did I know a couple of years ago when I met Mike Richards that he would become a big part of my life, but then I didn’t know the twists and turns that my life would take.

First a little history: As a young person I always had a weight issue, but it really became a problem after college. I decided to do something about it, and over 30 years ago with a doctor¹s help, a daily diet pill, exercise and changed eating habits, I conquered the problem and went from 248 pounds to 185. I managed to keep most of the weight off, never again reaching that level; however as I got older I did regain some weight. So I know about weight how it can affect you both physically and mentally-that¹s where the story begins.

When I first met Mike he told me about how he had conquered his weight issue and I thought there is someone who really understands me. Little did I know how important that meeting would be. His positive attitude and ready smile really impressed me. He looked like he was really enjoying what he does, and now that I know him better, I know how true that is.

So briefly, to the "twists and turns" in my life. Diagnosed with prostate cancer in the fall of 2006, my surgeon suggested an aggressive approach consisting of three therapies because of my young age and good health. I followed his plan and when all was complete at the end of May 2007, my radiation oncologist told me that I really came through everything really well, without many side effects again thanks to my good health. However I did get a couple of side effects that fed on each other-loss of energy and weight gain both expected. Here I was back at 238 pounds, 10 away from my all time high. To add insult to injury the doctor warned me that the treatment and weight gain could cause diabetes, osteoporosis and high cholesterol. He asked me how I was going to handle this. No problem I said, I¹ll just give my exercise campaign a kick-start and lose the weight.

Well after 2 months and a total weight loss of 5-6 pounds I saw I going nowhere - so I remembered Mike and gave him a call. I thought he could do a couple of sessions with me. I had been exercising regularly for over 30 years thought I just needed to fine tune things. Well that isn’t what Mike does. He has a 12-week program that I thought cost too much money. After our initial phone conversation I did a lot of thinking, figured that this

is my life that I¹m talking about so I decided to get more information. I asked Mike if we could meet to discuss his program to see if I bought into it. That short meeting went on well over an hour-I went home thought about it some more and put the wheels in process to begin. I didn’t know that I’d have this long questionnaire to fill out, and that we weren¹t just talking about exercise, but rather a life style adjustment. After Mike reviewed the questionnaire we reviewed it together then put a plan together to get started. I set my goals and we started meeting weekly to check my progress. From the start I did well. The conversations every week was always positive and full of information. Articles were given to me about what we had talked about the previous week. There was a lot of laughter. I was working with someone who understood my needs, someone who was always encouraging. I had my nutritionist, my priest, my friend, my trainer and so much more all rolled into one. Most importantly he spent time with me. I never heard the clock ticking.

So the 12-week program was over the middle of January. I didn’t meet my goal. Maybe because so many people were telling me how good I look, including my surgeon and oncologist who both told me that I’m doing very well and that I look great. This isn’t about looking great; (but it is a great side effect) it’s about being healthy. With good health I can continue to enjoy a life that is full of good friends and a spectacular family.

2007 was a year of many challenges for me, working with Mike made it easier for me to face them-and as to not making my goal, well I’m very close. Seven pounds to go; not too bad seeing that I lost 27 pounds during the 12 Week program for a total of 32 pounds, when you add the 5 I did on my own. I also had my cholesterol checked while I was in the 12-week program. Let’s just say it looks like I’m a healthy 25-year old. It’s the best it has been in years!

So Mike continues to meet with me. He is helping me meet my goal, which should come soon. My life hasn¹t changed that much, it has been tweaked so that I can continue to stay healthy. I eat, I drink, I celebrate life and that 12-week program has changed to a rest-of-your-life scenario. It’s one that I enjoy. One major change has taken place I met a man who cares about me and listened to me he should be blessed for that alone. After all, alone I did not do this, and the future I will be able to handle because of the recent past. And as to the cost of the program it’s the best investment I’ve ever made. It has given me a better, fuller life. I even have muscles to show for it.

The best thing you can say to someone is the simple but powerful thank you. Without Mike I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I’m always amazed at where a simple introductory conversation can take you.
